Education

Ph.D. NC State (physics) BA Middlebury College - major physics, minor Hebrew I grew up in a small town in Maine where I literally walked miles in the snow to get to library to learn from books (yes actual print on paper). The internet has opened up an amazing world of learning opportunities for those not lulled away by its distraction. I have found that learning requires a sense of play and also a furious determination to push through hard things. There is no snow is Carolina but there are plenty of long lovely and sometimes cold walks through Wikipedia, Wikischolar and other paths in this great web of knowledge.

Experience

I have over 15 years tutoring experience from 3rd grade through college. My record of transforming D's and F's to A's is hard to equal. The kinds of students I get range from gifted and stifled by their schools to those who have become demoralized and are performing far below their ability. I believe math and physics should be fun and relevant to your life and interests and that parents have too many jobs to have to be a teacher as well. Let me help get your son or daughter up to speed and in a better place quickly. My goal is to work my way out of a job and have them succeed on their own. Some people wonder why I am more expensive than some of the other people here. It is really because I offer a different product. Through years of advanced study and research I have a deep knowledge of math. Counseling experience also helps me connect well with kids and have such extraordinary results. The socratic approach I have developed is very efficient at reducing the stress and trauma of learning. People with very gifted and advanced children are very happy with what I offer them. One of my junior high students is now doing Harvard/MIT math challenge problems in 9 months of work with a bright future ahead of him. I currently run my own tutoring service and am working on an alternative energy startup you can read about at chapelhillmathtutor (dot) com. SAT/MCAT test prep is part of what I offer. While I am opposed to most of the standardized testing and curriculum based approaches, I have lot of skills to beat these tests. Aside from my work with gifted (let us just say "accelerated" from now on - who knows what any of us are really capable of?) students in math, I take the occasional student of higher college and physics topics like electromagnetism, general and special relativity, quantum theory and hydrodynamics. I have spent my life on these topics and relish the opportunity to share ideas, paradoxes and unsolved problems in these areas.

Hobbies

I like cycling, inventing, cooking, having fun with kids. Some of my time is spent writing research papers in relativity and quantum mechanics. I love math and physics but can't really stand the academic world. A world without children every day and entrepreneurial opportunities to collaborate is far to stifling.
