RICHARD D.

Private tutor in Chapel Hill, NC

Education

M.A. in Biology (minor in Developmental Biology) from Duke University in 2012. M.Sc. in Math (minor in Statistics) from the University of Tennessee in 2007. B.Sc. in Math (minor in General Science) from Grace College in 1996.

Experience

I have a passion for helping students understand math and science so that they can enjoy and excel in their courses rather than just "getting by". I'm a former Community College Instructor of Math (full-time) and Biology (part-time) and have been tutoring privately in all levels of Math and Science since February 2015. At the college level, I've taught Developmental Math, College Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus, Statistics, Finite (Business) Math, Liberal Arts Math, and Intro Biology. I've also TA'ed courses in Cell & Molecular Biology, Physiology, Genetics, and Evolution. I was a graduate student in Biology (Duke) and Math (Tennessee) and prior to that I was a Web Development Programmer for 4 years using Visual Basic, ASP, SQL Server, and other Microsoft technologies.

Hobbies

When I'm not teaching or tutoring, I try to spend as much time as possible outdoors (usually close to some body of water). I'm also a big fan of music, especially local music, and I try to get out to see bands playing at least once a week. I also read a lot in my spare time, both non-fiction (biology, math, philosophy) and fiction (mostly literature and literary fiction).
