Experience
I've worked for Kaplan as an SAT teacher and tutor for the past 4 years. I am currently a tutor for student-athletes at UNC-Chapel Hill, working with students on math (everything up through Calc 2), computer science, and probability/statistics material. I have also tutored basic physics (mechanics/electromagnetism) in the past. Outside of the classroom I have also been teaching swimming to students aged 3-adult for over 10 years. I enjoy working with students to build an intuitive understanding of the material. As someone who changed fields late into undergrad (humanities -> engineering), I can relate to struggling with material that feels "out of your league." My teaching style is somewhat Socratic; I generally aim to lead student to the answer by asking questions rather than instructing directly. However, if someone is struggling I will always lend a hand. I also am a big proponent of redundancy in learning by covering the same material in different ways. I have found that this approach helps students build an intuition about the material. Generally I have worked with high school sophomores through college students, but I am happy to work with 8th graders and high school freshman with a deep or advanced interest in the material.
